GSM (Geser Sedikit Mati/Groupe Spécial Mobile/Global System for Mobile communication)
What is GSM? GSM is Global System for Mobile communication it’s a global standarditaion for digital mobile communication. Actually the GSM name is a group for standarditaion that built at Europe in 1982 to standardizing mobile cellular phone at Europe that operated on 900MHz frequency. GSM itself is originally abbreviation of Groupe Spécial Mobile.
There is 3 variant of GSM based on frequency band.
- GSM900, work on 900MHz
- GSM1800, work on 1800MHz
- GSM1900, work on 1900MHz
Below is structure of GSM network

MS
Mobile station, can be like hand phone, pda, laptop, etc.
BSS
Base Station System, doing all radio functionality. BSS consist of BSC and BTS.
BSC
Base Station Controller, connected BTS to MSC, it is a high capacity switch for handover, controlling RF level on BTS.
BTS
Base Tranciever Station is a radio equipment to interfacing with mobile stations.
EIR
Equipment Identity Register is a database that consist of information about indentity of mobile station .
AUC
Authenticaiton Center, this unit is provide authentication and encryption parameter to verification identity of every call and ensure every call is secure.
VLR
Visitor location register, database that consist of temporary information of MS. Its used for MSC to take care of incoming MS from another area.
MSC
Mobile Switching Center, MSC doing switching function every call.
